My experience volunteering for MySmallHelp

Leander Hollings 12/08/2007

I have been working as a volunteer for MySmallHelp since it was founded in January 2007. My Nepali friend Razoo purchased a URL and informed me that he set up MSH because I had inspired him! We became friends whilst I was working as a volunteer at an orphanage in Nepal during 2006. Razoo and I had been through a very emotional experience with the children at the orphanage and I felt that I had no other choice than to help him.

VISION - upholding children's rights

MySmallHelp was founded in Nepal and the UK by a group of friends in January 2007. Its mission is to ensure that children are provided with their basic rights.

Every child has his/her own set of rights like adults, but sometimes the rights of children are lost. They do not get what they deserve and they are often exploited. If you have been brought up in a warm, safe and loving environment you should be grateful and consider yourself as one of the lucky ones. Not all chilren are brought up in an environment where parents respect their rights.

Many people are not even aware of the basic rights of children. Listed below are a few basic rights of a child:

- Right to protection from physical or mental harm and neglect, including sexual abuse   or exploitation.
- Right to a name and nationality from birth.
- Disabled children have the right to special treatment, education and care.
- Right to education.
- Right to equal opportunity.

These are some of the basic rights of a child. Look around you, at your home and your city. Is every child getting what he/she is entitled to and is is he/she able to exercise his/her rights? We looked around us and asked ourselves the same questions. The answer was NO.

Our dream and objective is to try and bring about changes in the lives of underprivileged children - to give them what is rightfully theirs and what they deserve. We hope that our small dream will come true, and that every child in our country will grow up to be a proud citizen of Nepal, a true Nepali.

Education - the foundation of a brighter future

MySmallHelp believes that education is the key to a brighter future for all children. Currently, MSH's main activity is sponsoring the education of poor children in Nepal.

Many parents in Nepal need their children to work from an early age to help supplement the household income and so simply cannot afford to send their children to school. MSH counsels parents to help them understand the value of education. By working together with schools, parents, NGOs, businesses and orphanages, MSH aims to help the whole community by beginning with the children.

However, MSH believes that providing education alone is not always enough. Families often have more immediate needs that tend to overshadow a child's education and force them out of school, so MSH conducts an initial interview with the parent/guardian of the child. After this assessment, MSH decides on a case-by-case basis if we can offer books, stationery, medicine, clothes etc. to help the family of the sponsored child. This alleviates immediate welfare concerns to enable the child to enter, and more importantly, remain in education. MSH monitors the attendance and progress of the children through direct relationships with teachers and schools, and also aims to go one step further by helping the sponsored children find a job upon completion of the School Leaving Certificate (SLC).

MSH Guardians

Each sponsored child is assigned an MSH member as a guardian. This enables MSH to have a close relationship with the sponsored child, school and family. MSH aims to provide personal support and guidance to the sponsored children, their parents and their communities. MSH finds new members for the volunteer/guardian team through friends or friends of friends to ensure that all members are honest, hard-working, trustworthy and committed to our mission. We aim to be a unique organization that delivers support directly to communities, focusing on the needs of children at its heart.

MSH aims to remain free from corruption and we guarantee not to make a business our of this much-needed aid work.

IN THE FUTURE

MSH is currently sponsoring the education of over 70 children through individual monthly sponsorship and has raised approximately £7600 over the past year. In the future, MSH plans to work on larger projects involving setting up a training centre for web designers, a special nutrition programme for street children, and a nationwide FM radio teaching project in partnership with other NGOs.

MSH also aims to create a sustainable way of helping children to have a better life, both now and in the future. By providing free education we are supporting families that could not otherwise afford to educate their children. MSH would also like to create jobs for these children in the future. We believe that by opening several training centres, we will be able to train children in a specific skill which will then open up new work opportunities for them. Once trained, we also intend for participants to commit to passing their new skills on to others.
